Small Town Gay Bar

Two decades ago, director Malcolm Ingram shined a beautiful, raw, and deeply moving spotlight on the resilience of LGBTQ+ communities in the Deep South with his groundbreaking documentary, Small Town Gay Bar. This year, we are bringing it back to San Francisco’s most iconic silver screen.

Small Town Gay Bar is a tribute to the resiliency of gays living in rural areas throughout America. A moving portrait of men and women fighting to create and maintain community for themselves in the face of great opposition, hypocrisy and prejudice in a largely ignored subculture of discreet backdoor entrances and hushed sexual expression in small town Mississippi.

Experience the film like never before with a gorgeous, brand-new 4K restoration print that captures every ounce of heart, struggle, and triumph in crystal-clear definition. Following the screening, Peaches will sit down with special guest director Malcolm Ingram for an exclusive, live Q&A diving deep into the legacy of the film, behind-the-scenes secrets, and how the landscape of queer safe spaces has evolved over the last twenty years.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to celebrate queer history, cinema, and community at the Castro Theatre!
